Montage Sur-Onglets or Hinge Binding

We will be making two finished bindings using the montage sur-onglets structure, or the hinge binding. This binding is great for making a lay-flat book, a book with bulk added such as postcards, photos, etc so your binding won’t be pizza-shaped, and if you have a single panel that can’t fold but still want to bind it, then this structure is for you!
The two bindings will represent two different techniques but still doing a hinge binding. One will be for bulk items and how to handle that thickness within your pages, like my Tarot for the Misguided binding. The other will be if your page is too thick to bend such as board, like my Pangolin Pandemic binding.
Day One: explaining the hinge binding structure and how we end up with the correct hinge thickness, preparing our pages for both bindings, sewing up the books, adding a spine lining.
Day Two: preparing the spine and two cover boards for covering and attaching the pieces to your text block.
Participants will need to bring: ruler, pencil, awl, bonefolder, scissors, xacto knife or small Olfa knife, small and large triangle, dividers if you have them.

About our Workshop Presenter: Gabby Cooksey
Gabby Cooksey is a bookbinder and book artist living in Tacoma, WA. She studied at American Academy of Bookbinding and received her diploma from North Bennet Street School for bookbinding. Her books are housed at University of Puget Sound, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and many institutions across the states.
