In this workshop, the student will learn Rachel’s process of making book cloth. We'll start with commercial, iron-on, and rice-paste book cloth samples and discuss the similarities and differences. She will share the fabric that she had success with and some thoughts about her bookcloth failures.
The class will go over her recipe for basic rice paste, prepping the kozo and fabric, and the steps to adhere the kozo and fabric together.
All students will leave with their leftover rice paste, one 23.85-in x 35.85-in dry-erase board, two pieces of drying paper-backed book cloth, and the written instructions on how to make more.

Instructor Bio: Rachel Watson is a graphic designer and book artist in the PNW. A bibliophile at heart, the merging of imagery and text has been a part of her life for many years. She is a current board member for Puget Sound Book Artist.
Pulling inspiration from Dadaism, with its visual cacophony of type and image, the collage work of Matisse, the minimalist work of Chantry and Bass, as well as contemporary letterpress artists Spring and Kennedy Jr.; my research-based concepts are rooted in my research-focused background and my graphic design education. I respond to my emotional state and then, through research, ideate work that speaks to these emotions. I am inspired by my surroundings in nature, light playing through leaves, textures of various plants and flowers, and the way colors layer and amplify, but also my family. My more creative-based pieces are a homage to the people I am closest to and our lives.
