Instructor: PSBA member and artist Becky Frehse has been teaching visual arts for many years, including at the University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University. Her busy studio in Tacoma contains a plentiful store of materials and tools for students to access and explore.

Description: Using found objects not typically considered to be book-making materials, artists will explore the possibilities for merging content with sculptural form(s) to create a one-of-a-kind book.

You will use Items assembled from your personal treasures and interests as well as appropriating things from Becky’s stockpile of “great stuff”.  Imagination required.

DAY ONE:  Exercise/practice in making a book with a “cover” made from materials provided by the instructor. How does the materiality and shape of the unconventional cover inform the possible shape and content of the book? Share your idea(s) with group.

After a one-hour lunch break, a slide show of alternative books and brainstorming. Then, Hunting and Gathering for your own found-object book. Prepare for Day Two; use your sketchbook and collect more stuff you think you might need. Make a plan of action. (It’s OK to change your mind along the way).

DAY TWO: Construction Zone! Materials are accumulated and ideas are busting out all over. You have all day to assemble your work.  Clean up is at 3 p.m. group sharing and photos at 3:15 – 4 p.m.

All skill levels are welcome; level of difficulty based on your own technical proficiency.

Participants need to bring basic book binding tools; cutting mat, scissors, x-acto knife, awl, bone folder, ruler, etc. Also, a sketch book and grocery bag-size collection of accumulated stuff* including any paper you might like to use (assorted papers will also be available).

*A list of suggestions will be provided prior to the workshop. Bringing a sack lunch is recommended. Snacks, water, coffee, hot water, microwave, and cooler will be available.

Materials fee: $20

Space is limited to 11 participants, registration is required, payment is due at the time of registration. PSBA does not accept walk-ins to workshops. Becky’s studio is NOT wheelchair accessible.
