Description: These two-part workshops are being developed this year by PSBA in order to provide an introduction to Book Arts for members who are new to book arts and want a solid grounding in the history, terms, materials, techniques and structures used in their creation. The syllabus will allow PSBA to make these a regular annual offering for new members, as well as creating the potential for instructional events for the general public.
In Part A of this 2-part workshop, we will introduce participants to the vocabulary, definition, history, tools, techniques and basic structures used in the making of book art. We will create three basic structures: a single-page folded book, a pamphlet-stitch book, and a concertina (accordion) book. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage with structures from the Shereen LaPlantz Collection, housed in the Archives & Special Collections at Collins Library, University of Puget Sound.
BookArts101B: The Basics will be offered later in the year. Building on what was learned in the first workshop, this workshop will provide time for participants to share their creations inspired from the first workshop and provide instruction in the more complex structures of stab-binding and dos-a-dos binding.
Participants will take away their created structures and the syllabus of content for each section of the Basic Book Arts Workshop. We will also consider setting up a closed group on Instagram for sharing images of participants’ creations inspired by the workshop.
Participants will need to bring a sack lunch, personal hydration bottle, and the following items:
- A bone or Teflon folder
- A Book Binder's Needle
- An 18” ruler
- An Xacto knife or snap-off blade & cutting mat/ or sharp scissors
- A piercing awl
- A piercing cradle or phone book
- A means of taking notes
- The $20 materials fee (cash only, please)
Materials fee of $20.00 will cover the cost of the papers and reproduction of the instructional materials to be used. The fee is due on the day of the workshop. Please bring exact change.
