We are delighted to share our September details today! We are honored to have artist/archivist Sauda Mitchell join us for what will be an inspiring conversation!
Sauda Mitchell is a printmaker, archivist, and educator from Winston-Salem, NC. She holds degrees from the Savannah College of Art and Design and a Master's in Library and Information Science from Drexel with a focus on archival studies. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership and her research centers around marginalized students' access to archives. She has held a number of workshops which introduce artists to how archives can serve as inspiration for artists' books as well as developing workshops which explore African American artists, and books as a contemporary art form.
Her work focuses on visual storytelling by utilizing printmaking and QR code technology as a creative non-traditional access method, linking viewers to archival repositories, curated exhibitions, and aggregated data. Each work serves as a visual response to archival collection materials representative of the many stories that can be found deep within the archival landscape. Her book, Never Forget, is part of the Collins Library collection and was featured in the Changing the Conversation exhibition last fall. It is an accordion style book that brings attention to the crimes committed against black bodies, both past and present, and sheds light on influential Black Individuals.
