NOTE: This workshop is designed for PSBA members in the Learning to Teach cohort. The instructor, Roberta Lavadour, will demonstrate how to teach by guiding us in a technique. She will also share her process of designing this virtual workshop, so we gain insight into her teaching strategy. Artists who join this cohort will become a part of PSBA’s first class of skilled book arts instructors, and will be asked to give back to PSBA by teaching a workshop or in some other way in the future.

Workshop Description "Sewn Board Binding":

Participants will receive instructions on materials selection and dimensions if they would like to prep their own workshop kit at no cost. Upon registration, participants who would like to receive a kit will order directly from Roberta* at least 2 weeks (January 1, 2023) before the start of the class ($25).

A private link to detailed instructions on sewing and backing text blocks will be sent in a confirmation email to paid participants. Each participant will arrive at the Zoom session with the sewn and backed text block ready to finish.

Class participants will finish their books together via Zoom with step-by-step instructions, tips, and tricks. There will be time for questions, conversation, and sharing of finished works.

Skill Level: This class is most appropriate for those who have sewn a book before, though anyone who has some experience with handcrafts can have success as well. If can follow clear printed instructions working independently and can get your text block ready for the ZOOM session, join us!  You must be part of PSBA’s Learning to Teach cohort to participant.

Roberta Lavadour has been exhibiting artist’s books and design bindings for more than 20 years, inspired by everything from found objects to her tangled family history.  While she lives and works in rural Eastern Oregon, her books travel around the world in a variety of juried and invitational exhibitions.  Her work is marked by rampant curiosity and a desire to explore the possibilities of the book as an art form.  To learn more about Roberta, visit her webpage at: robertalavadour.com
