Location: This workshop will take place in Ann's home studio near Olympia. Masks will not be required and we will likely work outside on a large deck overlooking a beautiful garden and the Puget Sound.  If the weather is inclement, we can work inside with doors and windows open.  The studio is a 30-minute drive from Olympia, 60 minutes from Tacoma; carpooling is suggested. Address and directions will be sent to registered participants prior to the workshop.

Space is limited to 8 participants. Registration is required and payment is due at the time of registration. PSBA accepts no walk-ins to workshops.

Skill Level: all skill levels are welcome

In this workshop we will learn how to make abstract prints to decorate and embellish your artist's books using watercolor and plants. We will also learn how to make a nested accordion book that will function as a small gallery for your illustrations, eco-prints, abstract imagery or writing. The book structure has two accordions nested inside each other which pop-out when opened–a colorful and fun surprise! Papers for the book will be provided by the instructor, although if you have some small illustrations you'd like to include in the 'gallery' section you're welcome to bring them.

About the Instructor: Ann Storey fell in love with the medium of artist's books many years ago when she coordinated the Gallery 76 in north central Washington that displayed a remarkable selection of these creative wonders. In her subsequent teaching of art history at the Evergreen State College she was fascinated by medieval manuscripts and often taught her students how to make books using the Coptic Stitch and how to illustrate them using both ancient and contemporary methods. Now that she is retired she is ardently pursuing creating her own artist's books and trying to master the challenging medium of watercolor painting.

Participant tools and materials list:

  • Cutting mat, 9” x 12”
  • Cutting knife and scissors
  • PVA and brush or glue stick
  • Ruler, 12”
  • Watercolor paints and small leaves or tiny flowers—optional (If you don't have watercolor paints, the instructor has some to share–there's no need to invest in paints before the workshop. Likewise, if you don't have leaves or flowers, you can gather some from Ann’s garden as the workshop starts.)

Workshop Fee includes paper and any other materials used during the workshop
