This workshop will take place over 5 days, with the following schedule:

  • ·         February 14, 2:45-4:00 pm, Zoom session 1
  • ·         Instant Messaging between participants February 15-17, as determined by participants
  • ·         February 18, 1:45-4:00 pm, Zoom Wrap Session 2

In this workshop the challenge to participants is to boldly try something intricate in your choice of structure, materials, theme, and design. Produce a cunning curiosity of your own!

“In the United States, a miniature book is usually considered to be one which is no more than three inches in height, width, or thickness. Some aficionados collect slightly larger books while others specialize in even smaller sizes. Outside of the United States, books up to four inches are often considered miniature.” The Miniature Book Society

About the Instructor: Patricia Chupa added making and teaching book arts to her lifelong bibliomania (reading, making, writing, collecting, bookselling, and library loaning) about 35 years or so ago. Now retired, she happily creates in her home studio, and enjoys immensely learning from, sharing knowledge, and encouraging book arts and artists. She lives in Olympia, WA.

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Skills/tools needed:

  • ·         Tools needed for fine work
  • ·         Comfort with various structures adaptable to miniaturization
  • ·         Comfort with provision of well-lighted close-up digital photos
  • ·         Comfort with self-directed collaborative interactions using Instant Messenger video sessions (instructor will provide training in the first session).

Space is limited to six (6) participants. Registration is required and payment is due at the time of registration.

Participant supply/materials list:

  • ·         Fine scissors
  • ·         Small bone folder
  • ·         PVA glue; All-purpose glue (for hard objects)
  • ·         Double-sided mounting sticky squares
  • ·         Fine-nozzled glue squeeze bottle
  • ·         Small sized 6” metal ruler
  • ·         Fine awl
  • ·         Small punching cradle
  • ·         Scalpel or Xacto knife and blades
  • ·         Fine binding thread and needle
  • ·         Beeswax
  • ·         Assorted binders board scraps; decorative paper scraps; leather scraps: text-weight paper, card stock or watercolor paper for text block (if structure requires); enclosures, embellishments, found object items; ribbons, leather thread, buttons, clasps or other closures
  • ·         Good magnifier light source
  • ·         Lots of patience!

Day 1:  (Via Zoom)

  • ·         The instructor will provide an overview of the assignment for work on your own miniature book.
  • ·         We will review examples of a variety of book artists making these pieces, written materials on their construction (a list of reference titles and web links will be sent to participants in advance) and share samples of miniature books you have made in the past.
  • ·         We will review how to use Instant Messenger for paired and/or group sessions.

Days 2-4 : (individual work and/or shared sessions via IM)

  • ·         Participants will design, assemble materials, create and collaboratively converse with one another as desired whilst making their book. Each participant will photograph their finished piece, send to the instructor, and be ready to share their digital images. The instructor will be available evenings from 6-8pm via IM, to assist with any technical questions during these days.

Day 5: (Via Zoom)

  • ·         The group will reconvene to show and discuss their completed books, and the collaborative discussions they shared.
