This workshop explores a process to create prints on paper with fresh and pressed plant materials provided by the instructor, collected during walks around the local area or brought by students from home. The first day students will learn botanical contact printing immersion techniques using dye baths on assorted paper. On the second day, the results will be used to create long-stitch sewn books, a simple Jacob’s Ladder and a non-adhesive hybrid structures based on the accordion.

The first day students will learn botanical contact printing immersion techniques using dye baths on assorted paper. Registration is limited, $200 Workshop Fee, Payable at time of registration

Materials fee payable to instructor at beginning of workshop: $30.00, includes paper, dye and mordants, thread, buttons, spine leather, use of shared tools and equipment.

Materials/equipment to be supplied by students:

  • bone folder, 
  • book binding needle, 
  • X-acto knife and #11 blade or Olfa knife, 
  • metal ruler or straight edge for cutting, 
  • cutting mat, 
  • small awl or bodkin, 
  • lots of leaves and plant material, fresh and pressed.  Good leaves include:  deciduous trees/shrubs (maple, plum, hazelnut, oak, alder), ferns, eucalyptus.  To press plants, place the plant between pages in a telephone book, or paper between boards and press in a book press or under heavy weight.  You may have to change out the sheets of paper as the plants press to prevent mold.

Skill level: Some knowledge of basic book binding (accordion fold, pamphlet stitch) is helpful.

Rebecca Chamlee is a book artist, printer, writer and bookbinder who has published letterpress printed, limited-edition press and artist’s books under the imprint of Pie In The Sky Press since 1986. Her work is in prominent special and private collections throughout the U.S. and has been exhibited widely.

Rebecca is an Associate Professor at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles where she teaches bookbinding, letterpress printing and artists’ book classes and heads the Book Arts minor program. She also holds workshops at her studio and book arts centers throughout the country.
