A short presentation on the transformation of washi (Japanese paper) into cloth and cloth-like materials. Japanese craftsman, over the past 1400+ years have developed innovative techniques to transform washi, an abundant material in Japan, into a material useful for clothing, bags, household objects and decor. In the hands of contemporary artists, these traditional materials and techniques can inspire wonderful ideas for textured papers, book structures, fiber art, sculpture, and more.
This presentation will show how natural materials such as konnyaku transform Japanese paper into a cloth-like material that can be sewn and is useful in the book arts. Kami-ito is spun thread made from Japanese paper, and then woven into cloth called shifu. Kakishibu dyes and waterprooofs washi to create patterns, waterproof materials and strong papers for stenciling and pochoir.
Of Special Note: There will be a selection of related Japanese papers, tools and supplies available for sale at the event, or to order!
