We’ll employ plants from the wild, the cultivated garden, and the kitchen to produce a wide palette of color, effect, and design. We’ll also create stencils from leaves and flowers. We’ll briefly discuss mordants, and the ethics of foraging. Catherine will bring samples and her artists’ books to survey for potential outcomes.

Puget Sound Book Artists presents

Botanical Contact Prints on Paper aka Eco-printing Workshop

taught by Catherine Alice Michaelis

                          July 28, 2018 -- 10 am-5pm (Tacoma)

  Studio B (Becky Frehse studio)

6400 N 48th Street, Tacoma, WA  98407

Learn how plants can transfer their pigments to paper in both planned and unpredictable ways using pressure and hot water.

We start with a demo of a few different wrapping techniques and plant alchemies, working quickly to get a few bundles into the vat. We’ll alternate bundling and cooking with show & tell as we go through the day so we may survey our successes, challenges, and differences. One day: 8–10 papers each.

The class will be held outside to allow for cooking of plant-bundled papers. Please wear hats and/or sunscreen as needed for self care. Instructor will provide paper for printing, and a wide variety of plant material. Students will bring: four wide binder clips; their choice of latex/rubber/nitrile gloves to wear when rinsing papers; scissors for cutting leaves and flowers, onion skins and trimmings from a few onions. Upon registration, students will receive an email list of additional, optional suggested plant materials to bring.

Catherine Alice Michaelis is an artist, writer, publisher, curator, teacher, and most recently – videopoet and animator living in Shelton, WA. She has a B.A. in Media Arts & Creative Nonfiction.
