Making Oak Gall Ink

with Mark Hoppmann

April 16th, 1-3pm

Collins Library, Book Arts Room

University of Puget Sound

Registration limited to 8 Participants

Registration is Required

$20 Workshop Fee, $15 Material Fee

Join Mark Hoppmann as we make Oak Gall Ink using a traditional recipe used by scribes.  No experience necessary.  We will be working with hot surfaces, and chemicals, to make our ink.  The instructor will provide both safety glasses and gloves.

We will be making two types of ink:  Using only oak galls, we will make a brown ink.  Using oak galls and adding ferrous sulfate will give us a rich black ink.  After our ink is made and while it is cooling, the instructor will conduct a quick demonstration on how to make a bamboo reed pen followed by an opportunity to use bamboo pens and the freshly made oak gall ink after which each participant will take home their own bottle(s) of ink.  Time permitting, there will be a brief docent's tour of the exhibition, Scripts & Scribes & Scribbles following the work shop.  For more information about the artist, visit his website.

NOTE:  The library opens at 1pm!

Mark graduated in 1978, from Drake University with a BFA in graphic design and commercial art.  Applying his 20 years of experience in the graphic arts industry when making his books, he works in a variety of mediums.   With a camera and sketchbooks that he creates in his studio in Tacoma, Washington, he captures the weatherworn textures of nature in watercolor and whatever medium he has at hand.  The artist says, “My excursions have resulted in an eclectic accumulation of bric-a-brac, memories, experiences, and books, all which in turn, inspire my paintings, drawings, illustrations, and books”.

There will be a $15 Materials Fee paid to the instructor at the beginning of the workshop.

Instructor will provide:

  • Drawing Paper (Registrants can bring their own sketchbooks if they prefer)
  • Bamboo pens and uncut  reeds
  • Ink bottles
  • Materials for making ink
