Thursday, July 7, 2022, 1:00 – 4:00 PM

Workshop Description: The dragon book structure, also known as the snake fold is a simplified version of the petal fold used in origami. The seeming simplicity of folded book structures easily lend to creating more complex structures.  In this workshop you will learn the fundamentals of folding, scoring and folding tools and explore the versatility of this structure.

We will start by making a model book to learn the basic fundamentals of the structure. We will then move to pushing the boundaries of the structure and create a finished book using Origami papers.

Each participant will take away the book structure in a “learning model” format and a finished book with “hard covers” made with Origami paper. The finished book is approximately 3x3 inches.

About the Instructor: Debbi Commodore is interested in the value and importance society gives to places, objects, and materials.  The themes found in her work are fluid and intersect with one another. Her curiosity of the book form explores the tension between the traditional book format and using materials outside their expected use. She searches for the story in ordinary, unexpected, and sometimes disposable materials.

Her work has been exhibited in the US and in the UK, has been published in 500 Handmade Books Volume 2, and is held in University collections, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art collection and private collections.

Debbi lives and works in Tacoma, Washington.  Her relief prints are linocut or woodblock printed from a Vandercook No. 1 proof press.
