The art of paper marbling dates back to 12th Century Japan where the process of floating ink on a viscous solution to transfer color designs onto paper is known as Suminagashi. Other marbling traditions derived from 15th Century Iran and Turkey and eventually spread throughout Europe.
This introductory workshop will teach you the basic chemistry and methods to create your own marbleized paper designs on a variety of papers. The first afternoon teaches essential preparation steps for marbling; how to prepare paper with alum, mixing methylcellulose for proper viscosity, the chemistry for mixing fluid acrylic paints for best adhesion to paper, and fundamentals of surface design.
Day 2 is all about the hands-on “floating” of color on trays of thickened water to transfer your own designs onto paper. Participants will create 8-10 pieces of marbled paper to take home.
All skill levels are welcome, but the emphasis is on beginning methods and materials for marbling.
